PHP in Dallas for Structured Behavioral Health Care

Our outpatient partial hospitalization program (PHP) is designed to bridge that gap in mental health treatment for working adults. A PHP program is a structured, intensive non-residential level of care that provides evidence-based therapies and modalities to address substance abuse and mental health issues.

Behavioral health and mental health treatment services consist of different levels of care, from the most intensive to the least intensive. The levels of care descend from high-intensity residential treatment, PHP, intensive outpatient program (IOP), to standard outpatient program (OP).

How PHP Differs From Inpatient Care and Outpatient Treatment

Residential treatment, PHP program, and IOP are descending levels of care intensity, with some overlapping features and major differences. An inpatient treatment program is the highest level of care, requires 24/7 supervision in a facility, and focuses on safety and detox for those in need of addiction treatment. Residential treatment is best suited for individuals in acute crisis, severe mental illness, detox, or who are considered a safety risk.

PHP is a step-down in level of care from inpatient care that offers full-day structured care without overnight stays. A PHP program focuses on intensive therapy, medication management, and daily medical monitoring. PHP is best suited for individuals who need stability support, but have a stable support system at home, which makes 24/7 monitoring unnecessary.

IOP is a step-down from PHP and provides a structured, but flexible schedule for those able to function independently between sessions. An IOP program mostly focuses on relapse prevention, ongoing recovery, and skill-building. IOP is best suited for individuals transitioning from PHP or managing moderate mental health symptoms.

Group Therapy and Peer Support

Peer support in group therapy is an important daily component of a PHP program where you focus on emotional processing, relapse prevention, and building social skills. Listening and sharing experiences with those facing similar mental health challenges helps foster connection and a sense of belonging. Connecting with peers in group therapy also reduces isolation, increases motivation, and fosters interpersonal growth.

Individual Therapy and Evidence-Based Modalities

A comprehensive PHP program includes individual therapy as a core component for personalized one-on-one sessions with a clinician. Individual therapy gives you a safe space to dive deeper into mental health issues, daily challenges, build coping skills, and integrate those skills into daily life.

Evidence-based therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) address negative thought patterns, behaviors, and emotional responses. CBT helps you recognize and change negative thought and behavior patterns that contribute to mental health issues. DBT teaches you how to foster mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness to manage intense emotions and self-destructive behaviors.

Medication Management and Psychiatric Services

Psychiatric services in PHP include daily evaluations, medication management, and psychiatric monitoring as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Clinicians will conduct regular check-ins for mood and symptom changes and prescribe, monitor, and adjust medications to ensure your safety and treatment adherence.

Morning Structure and Therapeutic Start

Your daily program will typically start and end around the same time every day to help build consistency in a structured routine. The day will start with a check-in with our nursing staff, who will check your vitals, administer medication, and provide support for struggles that may have occurred overnight.

Then you’ll attend a group session to set your agenda for the day, review goals, and connect with peers to start the day with intention and stability. This is followed by holistic, evidence-based modalities like mindfulness, meditation, and psychoeducation.

Midday Therapy Sessions and Skill Building

After your morning activities, you’ll move into your midday therapy sessions and skill-building group. Midday sessions may include individual and group therapy sessions to work on treatment goals, review progress, and build coping skills. You’ll also build emotional regulation and relapse prevention skills, and strengthen your support system with peers.

Afternoon Programming and Continued Clinical Support

Your afternoon programming will include continued clinical support to practice applying the tools you’ve learned to reinforce progress and wrap up the day. Afternoon sessions may include more group therapy work, experiential modalities, individual therapy, case management, processing groups, and daily review. Group work may focus on applying coping skills to real-world scenarios, while processing groups focus on discussing the day’s events, sharing, and peer support.

Additionally, you’ll attend experiential or recreational therapy treatment options like art therapy, psychodrama therapy, or mindfulness and meditation. Experiential therapies support reduced stress and improved emotional regulation. You’ll also either meet with your therapist for another individual session or your case manager for continued medication management.

Transitioning Home and Applying Coping Skills

At the end of the day, you’ll do a daily wrap-up to reflect on what you learned from the day. You’ll also review your goals from the day and establish an evening plan to manage potential symptoms when you go home. Your plan will also be used to apply learned strategies to be used effectively in real-world environments. Then you’ll check out and return to your life for the evening.

When to Consider a Partial Hospitalization Program in Dallas

Our partial hospitalization program in Dallas can offer a balanced approach to mental health care that fits into your life. If you’re struggling to manage symptoms, function at work, or maintain relationships, our PHP program can help.Signs that you may benefit from a PHP include:

Signs a Higher Level of Care May Be Needed

You may need a higher level of care in outpatient treatment if you’re experiencing mental health issues that are interfering with functioning in daily life. Some signs that you may need PHP:

  • Worsening mental health symptoms
  • Difficulty functioning due to stressors
  • Experiencing repeated crises
  • Insufficient progress in standard outpatient treatment

When PHP Is Appropriate Instead of Inpatient Care

PHP is an appropriate treatment program choice if inpatient care isn’t required, but you need more support than low-intensity OP. Some of the other considerations that make PHP more appropriate than inpatient or residential treatment include:

  • Transitioning from inpatient care
  • Needing more intensive stabilization/therapeutic support
  • You have a safe, supportive, and stable home environment
  • Needing more intensive medication management

Supporting a Loved One Through Mental Health Challenges

Watching a family member or loved one struggle with mental health issues is distressing, and trying to encourage them to seek treatment is understandably daunting. Supporting a loved one with mental illness starts with empathy and concrete help. You can express your concern using empowering statements and being specific about the things you have observed about their behavior or things they’ve said.

Moreover, providing concrete help means offering to help them find a treatment program, drive them to appointments, or research resources. Helping your loved one enter PHP gives them the support to regain stability and rebuild their life.

Support Services for Mental Health

Our PHP program provides a wide variety of additional support services to build an individualized treatment plan that fits your life and prepares you for real-world application.

Family Therapy and Support Involvement

Our expanded support services include guidance for family involvement and optional family therapy. We offer optional family guidance, psychoeducation, and support, coordinating family therapy to improve communication and support systems with your loved ones.

Relapse Prevention and Coping Skills Development

Our commitment to continuing care for lasting wellness is a core piece of our PHP program with structured relapse prevention planning. Comprehensive relapse prevention planning includes strategies to identify triggers, apply coping skills, and build a consistent daily routine to manage triggers and stressors.

Case Management and Aftercare Planning

We ensure clients receive ongoing care support for lasting wellness with a team-based approach to care. A team-based approach supports coordinated care with clinicians, case managers, primary care physicians, specialists, and other behavioral health services. This coordinated effort ensures case management for aftercare planning that includes continuing support for IOP, OP, or psychiatric services.
