Types of Therapy for Improving Mental Health

Alta Health, located in Dallas, Texas, is proud to offer several types of therapy for improving mental health in our outpatient programs. We provide personalized and quality outpatient mental health care for adults living with low-to-moderate acuity mental health conditions.

Understanding the Benefits of Therapy for Mental Health

Therapy is an essential part of mental health care. Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, offers a safe place to explore your thoughts and feelings, develop healthy coping skills, develop emotional resilience, enhance relationships with others, and improve overall quality of life. Even people without a mental health disorder can benefit from therapy, as it helps address personal challenges that can be difficult to navigate alone.

For people struggling with a mental health disorder, therapy doesn’t just help you feel better. It addresses the underlying cause of your mental health disorder, so it doesn’t keep harming you. For those living with chronic conditions, therapy improves overall quality of life by helping you manage your condition in a healthy way. Sometimes, just having someone to talk to who understands what you are going through can bring comfort and relief.

That’s why Alta Health is proud to offer a wide range of evidence-based, patient-centered therapies to help you and your loved ones find peace and healing.

Common Types of Therapy Used at Alta Health

Though many therapies are offered at Alta Health, psychotherapies are considered core parts of most treatment plans. This is because these therapies have been proven to be highly effective and are flexible enough to assist most people seeking mental health care.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

The most used psychotherapy is CBT, which is critical in identifying patterns in negative thoughts and behaviors. Once these patterns are identified, CBT is used to help change unhealthy patterns into healthy ones. For example, it can help someone recognize that they are self-isolating due to distrust and develop a plan to help them regain trust in others.

CBT is used to help with a wide range of mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a psychotherapy used to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve their interpersonal relationships, and develop distress tolerance skills. Those living with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, can find help managing their condition with DBT.

DBT is also highly effective in helping those struggling with self-harming conditions that are triggered by intense emotions, such as eating disorders.

Interpersonal Therapy
(IPT)

This type of psychotherapy focuses on improving your relationships and interpersonal effectiveness with others to relieve mental health symptoms associated with conditions like depression, social anxiety, or grief. Interpersonal psychotherapy can also help you improve your communication skills and relationship patterns.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Sometimes it can be difficult to accept your thoughts and feelings, which is where ACT can be helpful. ACT assists individuals in adopting a mindfulness and values-based action strategy so they can commit to actions aligned with their personal values. This increases psychological flexibility, allowing people to embrace life’s challenges and continuously move forward with healthy coping skills.

Group Therapy and Family Therapy

Therapies that integrate structured peer and family support are important in the mental healing process. They support skill-building in coping, communication, and relapse prevention by offering a space of understanding.

Group therapy, in particular, helps you see that you aren’t alone in your struggle and allows you to share valuable lessons, advice, and support. Family therapy helps improve your relationships with your loved ones and helps you overcome challenges with professional assistance.

How Therapy Supports Mental Health Conditions

Psychotherapy is flexible enough to help people living with a wide range of mental health conditions.

Mood Disorders

Therapy is critical in helping people with depression, bipolar disorder, and other persistent mood challenges change negative thought patterns and manage strong emotions.

Anxiety Disorders

Therapy is used to help people with anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, panic disorder, and phobias, find relief from and overcome their fears.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Therapy supports individuals managing the effects of traumatic experiences by helping them process and heal from these experiences without being re-traumatized.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Therapies use evidence-based strategies that can manage compulsions and intrusive thoughts associated with OCD and break the cycle of anxiety.

Other Mental Health Conditions

Therapy helps people manage and cope with other mental health conditions, such as stress-related concerns, adjustment difficulties, and low-to-moderate acuity behavioral health needs. This is especially important for chronic conditions that require individuals to learn healthy ways and strategies for long-term management.

That’s why each treatment plan at Alta Health is personalized by a licensed mental health professional. Customized treatment plans can use the therapies that are most effective for you or a loved one, instead of a cookie-cutter approach to mental health care. This, paired with short-term and ongoing therapy sessions, helps maintain progress in daily life.

Our Therapeutic Approaches

Alta Health providers offer evidence-based therapies and personalized treatment plans to provide the best level of outpatient care possible for our patients.

Personalized Treatment Plans

Each patient at Alta Health is carefully assessed at intake to identify their needs and goals. Treatment plans blend lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, psychiatry, and other treatment modalities as needed, which are custom-tailored to individual mental health conditions. As personal goals shift and coping skills are learned, plans are adjusted to ensure they remain effective for each patient.

Evidence-Based Types of Therapy

Alta uses a wide range of evidence-based therapies. Research and clinical guidelines, some with decades of real-world applications and study, support each therapy. Some examples of what we offer include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

Supporting Recovery Through Family & Loved Ones

Involving loved ones and family members in recovery can help patients find support and understanding as they work to improve their mental health. Those who have a support network are less likely to relapse and have better treatment outcomes compared to those who are isolated.

Benefits for the Individual and Their Support System

Choosing to utilize therapies such as family therapy or to involve loved ones in your recovery comes with several benefits. Coping strategies and emotional regulation skills are enhanced for both patients and their loved ones. Patients and their families learn practical tools for supporting recovery and wellness for a healthier home.

Patients and their loved ones also gain a better understanding of mental health conditions, including mood disorders, anxiety, PTSD, and more. This fights stigma, encourages support, and gives families the tools they need to help their loved one recover.

Collaborative and Compassionate Approach

Alta Health is led by licensed mental health professionals experienced in outpatient care. Therapy at Alta Health encourages a supportive environment while maintaining our patients’ autonomy and privacy. To better enhance our patients’ recovery outcomes, we integrate family support into ongoing outpatient treatment without requiring intensive involvement. Overall, patients can expect a compassionate and respectful experience with integrated, evidence-based mental health care.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

While Alta Health does not treat co-occurring substance use disorders, therapy is an important part of the treatment process for addiction and substance use disorders. Therapy addresses the underlying causes of these conditions.

Treatment length at Alta Health is based on the patient’s needs, goals, and progress. Short-term therapy can be completed in as little as a few weeks in our PHP or IOP. Others may require longer-term outpatient care to sustain recovery.

Outpatient treatment is for patients with low to moderate mental health conditions not severe enough to require inpatient treatment. This allows patients to receive therapy while at home, offering the flexibility and ability for them to maintain daily responsibilities.

Inpatient treatment provides 24/7 supervision in a hospital setting. It is best for those with severe mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia, where a person may need medication stabilization and long-term treatment approaches to help with daily living.

Alta Health provides outpatient care to help patients who want mental health care but need flexible treatment so they can continue with their daily responsibilities.

Yes, Alta Health does offer EMDR therapy for our clients. EMDR is used to help clients process and heal from traumatic memories without being re-traumatized in the process. We also utilize exposure therapy for patients struggling with anxiety disorders, including phobias.

Many different types of therapy are used to treat mental illness and other mental health conditions. Cognitive therapy (psychotherapy) is the most common. Behavior therapies are often combined with cognitive therapies to create therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodrama therapy.

Other common examples of therapies used for mental health care include mindfulness therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), art therapy, and motivational enhancement therapy (MET).

Sometimes medical-based therapies will be used to treat mental health disorders, such as neurotherapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and neurofeedback.

When a person experiences a traumatic event, it’s common for the brain to repress or bury it as a means to protect itself. This buried or repressed traumatic memory can lead to unconscious thoughts and feelings that influence current behaviors.

Psychodynamic therapy works by uncovering these memories, thoughts, and feelings through various psychotherapeutic techniques. Some examples include pattern detection, free association, and defense mechanism identification. This helps clients process painful memories and emotions, which leads to self-awareness, improved relationships with others, and healing.

Couples therapy can be effective in helping clients overcome relationship challenges and learn valuable skills, such as emotional regulation, problem-solving, and better communication.

To determine which type of therapy is best for you, you must first be assessed by a healthcare professional. They will examine your specific emotional and psychological needs, such as the presence of a mental health disorder and your personal treatment goals. You will be involved in this process, as your feelings and preferences are important in choosing the right treatment options.

Healthcare professionals will consider the effectiveness of different therapies as they further work to understand your unique situation. Once they have a treatment plan in mind, they will consult you to finalize it. Sometimes a referral will be given to other providers as part of your treatment plan. Treatment plans can be highly flexible and can be adjusted as your situation improves or changes.
